Zerelia Lakes

Two circular lakes with a distinct geological history and abundant natural beauty

Nestled in a verdant corner of Thessaly, just a few kilometres from Almyros, Magnesia, lie the unique Zerelia Lakes, a phenomenon unlike any other in Greece. With diameters of 250 and 150 metres respectively, they form a landscape of unparalleled natural beauty.
According to scientific research, these lakes likely formed from a meteorite impact roughly 10,000 years ago, ranking them amongst the few geological formations of this type across Europe. Their near-perfect circular shape, the serenity of the surrounding nature, and their remarkable history will inspire awe and wonder.
A significant wetland flourishes around the lakes. Birds of prey, migratory birds, herons, and other aquatic species find sanctuary in this tranquil natural setting. Furthermore, archaeological finds have been unearthed on the adjacent hill, indicating the presence of a settlement inhabited as early as the Bronze Age.
The serene Zerelia lakes are ideal for gentle outdoor pursuits, such as strolls, birdwatching, photography, and ecotourism. Situated just 40 minutes from Volos, they are the perfect destination for a day trip or a brief exploration of the wider area before continuing towards Mount Olympus or Pelion.
The landscape transforms, offering diverse hues and vistas depending on the season, from verdant summer months to the tranquil colours of autumn. Each visit is an experience that captivates the senses. The Zerelia lakes will enchant you and remain unforgettable.
