The Lagoon of Messolongi

The Lagoon of Messolongi

A Wetland of Life and Tradition

The Messolongi lagoon is the largest lagoon system in Greece, sculpted by the deposits of the Evinos and Acheloos rivers. As an Environmental Park protected by the Ramsar Convention and the Natura 2000 network, it is home to over 280 bird species (75% of the country's species), as well as the Echinades island cluster with its immense ecological value.
A Natural Fish Producer
Its shallow, warm waters provide an ideal breeding ground for sea bream, sea bass, eel, and flat-head grey mullet. This is where the very essence of local flavour is produced: Messolongi Bottarga (Avgotaracho), which comes from the female flat-head grey mullet (bafa) and is the only Greek fishery product with a PDO designation. Fishing is carried out both by independent fishermen and at traditional, natural fish farms (divaria).
The Salt Pans and Human Activity
The area is home to the country's largest salt pans, with salt production dating back to the 14th century. The method remains unchanged: the sun and wind dry the seawater, creating the white salt. The landscape is completed by the pelades, the wooden houses on the water, and the gaites, the traditional keelless boats that glide on the shallow waters.
Tourlida and its Therapeutic Properties
The lagoon is also renowned for its therapeutic mud. On the way to Tourlida, many visitors indulge in mud treatments, taking advantage of the beneficial properties of the soil. In the same area is the historic chapel of Agia Triada (the Holy Trinity), a monument to the heroic battle during the Greek War of Independence.
The Messolongi lagoon is more than a rare habitat. It is a vibrant ecosystem that blends environmental science with history and authentic gastronomy.
