The idyllic lake in the heart of Agios Nikolaos
In the centre of Agios Nikolaos, Lake Voulismeni is one of the most distinctive landmarks of the city and one of the most photographed locations in Crete. It is located just a stone’s throw from the port and connects to the sea via a small canal, created in the late 19th century.
The lake is almost circular, with a diameter of about 135 metres and a depth of more than 45 metres. Local legend has it that the goddess Athena and the goddess Artemis bathed in its waters. Every year, on the evening of the Resurrection, crowds gather around the lake for a spectacular celebration, with thousands of candles, fireworks, and light reflecting on the waters, an experience you will not soon forget.
In the summer, Lake Voulismeni hosts exhilarating cliff diving competitions. Top international athletes perform daring dives from the cliffs above the water before thousands of spectators, in an unprecedented, adrenaline-filled spectacle.
All around the lake there are cafés, taverns, and spots for resting. In the evening, the lighting and reflections on the water create a unique setting, ideal for taking a stroll or enjoying dinner with a view. At the top of the cliff surrounding it, the park offers panoramic views of the entire the city and port.
The Archaeological Museum of Agios Nikolaos, Ammoudi beach, and the city’s commercial centre are located nearby. The lake is easily accessible and is an ideal starting point for getting to know the city and the beauty of the surrounding area.
