The Turquoise Mirror of Crete

Between Chania and Rethymno, just a few kilometers from the sea, lies Lake Kournas—the only natural freshwater lake in Crete. Known in antiquity as Koresia, it is a true earthly paradise that enchants every visitor with its ever-changing colors and its impressive mountainous backdrop.

A Unique Ecosystem

This aquatic landscape changes with the seasons: in winter, it fills with water from mountain springs, while in summer it reveals a golden-white sandy shoreline. Despite the local belief that the lake is “bottomless,” its maximum depth reaches 22.5 meters. Included in the Natura 2000 network, the lake hosts rare species such as turtles, herons, cormorants, and goldfish, offering a safe haven for wildlife and birdlife.

A visit to Lake Kournas can be ideally combined with nearby excursions:

  • Argyroupoli: Built on ancient Lappa, it is famous for the springs of Agia Dynami and its lush waterfalls with old watermills.

  • Georgioupoli: A cosmopolitan seaside resort with a long sandy beach and the charming chapel of Saint Nicholas set in the sea.
