The Jamales

A special carnival custom

Carnival in the city of Ioannina acquires a special local character thanks to a custom that has been maintained since the 19th century and is revived every year with vitality and enthusiasm: the Jamales.
On the last Sunday of Carnival, in many quarters of the city, large fires are lit within a circle of sand, which are maintained until the morning of Clean Monday. A feast with dancing, singing, traditional bean soup, wine and tsipouro is set around them, composing an atmosphere of joy and hospitality that magnetises residents and visitors.
The Jamales bring together people of all ages in a community and celebration environment. The largest fires are set in quarters such as Karavatia, Kastro and Lakkomata, while a total of more than 60 points in the city participate.
Don't miss out on this unique experience. It is recommended to wear comfortable shoes and warm clothes, and you should follow the safety instructions about fire. Alongside the whole spectacle, you will taste traditional bean soup, having a representative taste of the local culture.
The Jamales is part of the cultural heritage of Ioannina that is worth experiencing up close. You will be charmed by the magic of fire, you will be swept away by the liveliness of music and you will be embraced by the warmth of hospitality, in a celebration of tradition that will remain unforgettable.
