A Libation to Divine Grandeur
At the sacred monasteries, the Nativity of Christ is celebrated in an ethereal atmosphere. The service starts on Christmas Eve, in candlelight, evoking feelings of reverence and serenity. Upon the completion of the service in the early morning, the monastic guesthouses are filled with well wishes and traditional delicacies.
There are six monasteries currently in operation:
· Great Meteoron: The oldest and largest monastery, showcasing remarkable Mount Athos architecture.
· Varlaam Monastery: Renowned for its masterful frescoes.
· Agiou Stefanou: A convent that offers panoramic views of Kalambaka and features a magnificent carved wooden iconostasis.
· Roussanou Monastery: Accessible despite it being located on a steep cliff, boasting magnificent post-Byzantine frescoes.
· Agios Nikolaos Anapausas: Decorated by the renowned Theophanes, it is the first monastery one encounters when approaching from Kastraki.
· Agia Triada: The most secluded monastery, rewarding visitors with its unparalleled views.
