Customs and traditions of Skiathos

An island with a wealth of folk heritage

Skiathos is an island that preserves its traditions as an integral part of life for the locals. Local identity is reflected through religious ceremonies, festivals, and celebrations that have been observed uninterrupted for centuries.
The most important event is the feast of Panagia Ikonistria on 21 November, when the miraculous icon is taken by procession to the Monastery of Evangelistria, attracting many faithful.
The islanders experience Easter with reverence. It stands out for the Athonite rites strictly observed in all the services of the Holy Week. On Holy Thursday, children sing carols holding reed crosses adorned with flowers and herbs. On Good Friday, the Liturgy of the Epitaph starts after midnight — as it does on Mount Athos —  while the procession begins at 04:00, before the dawn of Holy Saturday, and ends with the ‘Descent into Hades’ (the Harrowing of Hell).
25 March  is celebrated with the eothino, the traditional morning raising of the flag, and the torch procession, elements that refer to the years of the Ottoman rule.
On 23 August, Skiathos honours the salvation of the island after the Germans invaded the Castle and set it on fire in 1944. This day, just before liberation, remains a symbol of sacrifice and freedom.
Katsonia are celebrated in September, honouring the sacrifice of the Katsonis submarine. A memorial service is held every year for the victims.
Music and dance are the main components Skiathian tradition. At the feast of Zoodochos Pigi (Life-giving Spring), the Kamara dance is revived to the tune of traditional melodies. The dance is led by women in bright local costumes.
This verdant island of the Sporades has preserved its rich folk heritage, bridging the gap between the past and the present. In Skiathos, customs and traditions are an experience that makes visitors partakers of the history of the land.
