Patras Carnival

Revel in the rhythms of King Carnival

From early January until the peak of the Carnival season, Patras moves to a different beat. The city is filled with colour, music, and energy, as the Patras Carnival transforms everyday life into a collective celebration. It is the largest and oldest carnival in Greece and stands as one of the country’s most significant cultural institutions.
Its origins date back to 1829, in the early period of the modern Greek state. Since then, it has evolved continuously, maintaining its urban and satirical character. Elaborate floats, parades, and theatricality compose a festival inextricably linked to the identity of Patras.
The Opening Ceremony marks the beginning of the festivities, which spread throughout the city. The Grand Parade, on the final Sunday of the season, is the climax: dozens of floats and thousands of masqueraders flood the streets. In the evening, the Closing Ceremony, featuring the burning of King Carnival at the harbour against the backdrop of the sea, brings the celebration to a symbolic close.
The Patras Carnival is built on active participation. "Crews", residents, local students, and visitors all become part of the same experience, in a celebration where satire and play serve as a common language. The entire city, quite literally, lives for the fun.
Discover Patras during the most vibrant period of winter and experience a tradition that combines history, creativity, and community. The Patras Carnival is an experience you will cherish and remember forever.
