Festivals of Anafi

Island rhythm and faith

Anafi may be a small island, yet through its festivals reveal its vast heart. These are not merely expressions of faith, but gatherings where locals and visitors share food, wine, and stories.
The premier festival of the island is held on September 7 and 8 at the Monastery of Panagia Kalamiotissa, perched atop the rock of Kalamos. On the afternoon of September 7, residents ascend from the site of Prasies holding candles and carrying supplies for the night. The climb takes about an hour and culminates with a service in the small white monastery church, which dates back to the 17th century. Afterwards, pilgrims sit on the monastery steps and share the food they have brought, while the night sky becomes a backdrop for songs, tsambounes (traditional folk instruments of the island) and dancing until dawn. It is an experience of collective joy and emotion, open to visitors from across the Aegean Sea.
Throughout the year, Anafi celebrates at various other locations, each time with its own particular atmosphere:

  • On July 20, the Festival of Prophet Elias at Vrysi brings residents and travellers to the highest point of the village for prayer and song overlooking the open sea.

  • On July 27, the feast of Saint Panteleimon takes place at Vagia with crowds of people, music, and feasts on the beach.

  • On August 15, the Dormition of the Virgin Mary is honoured at the church of Panagia in the Chora, where the narrow streets fill with music and tables are spread out in the courtyards.

  • On January 17, the Festival of Saint Anthony at the eponymous Byzantine chapel above Roukounas keeps alive the winter custom of an open religious service and treating guests.

  • On October 26, the Festival of Saint Demetrius at Madourlo completes the annual cycle, combining a religious ceremony with an autumnal gathering of the inhabitants.

At every festival, the people of Anafi keep the tradition of hospitality alive, offering wine, pies, and the famous baked raki
