Silversmithing of Ioannina and KEPAVI

The charm of traditional silversmithing

In Ioannina, the art of silver has been evolving uninterruptedly for centuries and is an integral part of the city’s cultural identity. Ioannina silversmithing has been inscribed in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage and emerges as an important aspect of cultural tourism, combining history, craftsmanship and refined aesthetics.
The flourishing of the craft begins as early as the 15th century, a period during which the city develops into a leading centre of silversmithing in the Balkans. Silver is used to create jewellery, weapons, ecclesiastical vessels and everyday objects, which are decorated with refined techniques, such as filigree (a traditional technique in which fine silver wires are woven and soldered, forming lace-like patterns), as well as hammering and engraving. Every creation tells a story of perseverance, knowledge and artistic excellence.
As you explore the city, you will have the opportunity to discover this unique craft up close at the Silversmithing Museum, located within the Castle of Ioannina. There, through modern exhibitions and well-documented material, you will follow the course of silversmithing from the past to the present, understanding its role in the life and economy of the region.
A special place in preserving and keeping the tradition alive is also held by the Traditional Crafts Centre of Ioannina (KEPAVI). As a meeting place of past and present, it hosts silversmithing workshops, exhibitions, educational programmes and activities that highlight traditional techniques and contemporary creativity.
Ioannina silversmithing is inextricably linked with a stroll along the cobbled streets of the Castle, with Lake Pamvotida and with the city’s contemporary artistic expression. It is a unique reason to visit Ioannina, to discover the secrets of silver and to take home an authentic piece of Greek tradition. Discover an art that shines against time and be tempted to acquire a fine piece that will always remind you of Ioannina.
