Arachova textiles

A practical need that produced fine art

The art of weaving held such profound value for the women of Arachova that it was the traditional blessing of mothers to their newlywed daughters: "My blessing, daughter, that you may learn the loom, that your arms and legs glide like arrows." From a young age, every girl learned to weave – an occupation born of necessity. Who else would make  the household’s "clothes" or the dowry. Observe these textiles today, true works of art, and consider the effort and soul required to craft them.
While the karpitia – the famed carpets of Arachova – are the most renowned, these skilled women produced a vast array of weavings in countless patterns and colours. In the past, they even made their own yarn from scratch. After the sheep had been sheared, they would take the raw wool from the shepherds and scour, card, comb, spin, and, finally, dye it using pure pigments derived from plants.
By the time Arachova became a gateway for visitors traveling to Delphi, the craft had already begun to fade. In 1927, Angeliki Chatzimichali and Eva Palmer-Sikelianou organised the village’s first folk art fair, to connect local tradition with the famous Delphic Festivals. While interest was briefly reignited, the later creation of the Ski Centre and the ensuing tourism boom saw the art of weaving decline once more.
You can explore this entire history and view magnificent examples of local weaving craftsmanship at the Folklore Museum of Arachova, a true ark of tradition. Beyond its exhibitions, this beautifully curated space houses a rare archive of 20th-century patterns, currently being digitised for future researchers. The museum has also hosted Traditional Craft Workshops where old weavers passed their secrets down to a younger generation of Arachova women, preserving the tradition while providing a modern professional outlet. These workshops are expected to resume.
