Nikopolis

The Majestic City of Victory

A visit to ancient Nikopolis, just 8 km north of Preveza, is a true journey through time. The entrance through the grand West Gate of the Roman walls is awe-inspiring, transporting the visitor to an era of imperial glory and prosperity.
The City of Octavian Augustus
Nikopolis was founded by Octavian Augustus in commemoration of his decisive victory in the naval battle of Aktium in 31 BC. The remarkable monuments that survive testify to the wealth of the "City of Victory". Impressive are the Nymphaeum, which functioned as an aqueduct and temple, the Roman Odeon and the luxurious villas with ornate floors.
To the north, outside the walls (extra muros), stand the monument of the victory of Augustus, the imposing Theatre and the Stadium, where Aktia were held, competitions of international prestige in honour of Apollo.
Byzantine Renaissance
The history of the city continues in Byzantine times, with the imposing walls of Justinian protecting the religious centre of the area. Notable are the basilicas of Doumetios and Alkisson, famous worldwide for their exquisite mosaics, along with the grand episcopal palace.
The New Archaeological Museum
The experience is completed at the new Archaeological Museum of Nikopolis. With a modern museological approach, it highlights the private and public life of the inhabitants through rich finds, sculptures and objects of everyday use, capturing the grandeur of a city that was a crossroads of civilisations.
Nikopolis is not just an archaeological site, but an open history book that spans from the Roman Empire to Byzantium, offering a unique aesthetic and intellectual experience.
