More of Greece, coming soon...

Fort Lisse

Monument of resistance and freedom

Fort Lisse is located in the plain of Kato Nevrokopi, in Macedonia, and is one of the most glorious military monuments of Greece. A key part of the defensive Metaxas Line, it was constructed between 1936 and 1940. From 6 to 9 April 1941, one of the fiercest battles of the Second World War on Greek territory took place there, as the Greek garrison of the fort heroically resisted the fierce attacks of the German divisions. It is historically confirmed that Lisse was never captured by force. It only surrendered following the capitulation of the country, with the Germans paying tribute to its defenders for their bravery.
The fort complex includes four groups of underground tunnels, known as "Chelones" (Turtles), with the total length of the corridors exceeding 950 m. Today, Lisse operates as a modern Theme Park and War Museum.
Your visiting experience begins at the Monument and the visitable "Chelone", which you reach via a beautiful nature trail. Tour the renovated exhibition spaces and admire authentic relics, such as weapons, uniforms, photographs, and rare documents. The new virtual reality (VR) room will offer you an extremely vivid revival of the historic battle.
The Fort Lisse park keeps the memory of history alive, honouring the heroism of Commander Major Georgios Detorakis and his soldiers, with cannons from the time of the battle on display in the surrounding area.
For nature and history lovers, there is the Environmental and Sports Education Centre nearby, while in the settlement of Ochyro you can visit the post-Byzantine church of Agios Dimitrios and the chapel of Agia Paraskevi, which offers an excellent panoramic view. At Fort Lisse, you will experience the pride of the Greek resistance, discovering hidden treasures of Drama.
