Kritsa

A traditional village on the balcony of Eastern Crete

Constructed amphitheatrically on the slope of Kastellos mountain, a few kilometres outside Agios Nikolaos, Kritsa is one of the most historic and vibrant villages of Eastern Crete. This is a land with a long history that dates back to the Minoan era and an intense cultural identity that remains vibrant to this day.
Tour the picturesque alleys with the traditional stone houses, the geranium-filled courtyards, and the churches that emerge unexpectedly. The trademark of the village is its tradition in weaving and embroidery. Workshops and small shops reveal elaborate handmade handicrafts, based on patterns passed down from generation to generation: Doilies, tablecloths, traditional costumes, and home decorations.
A short distance from the village, you will find the historic church of Panagia Kera, dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos. This is one of the most important Byzantine monuments of Crete, known for its unique frescoes dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries, which present a variety of iconographic styles and skilled technique.
As for food, take the time to stop at nearby Kroustas, a quiet village with traditional taverns, famous for its antikristo (skewered lamb roasted around a fire), pies, and home-made salads with wild greens from the surrounding mountains.
If you are a nature lover, you can press on to Katharo plateau, at an altitude of 1,200 meters, which can be your starting point for hiking along trails and exploring, with spectacular views and an alpine feel.
Kritsa offers authentic Cretan experiences: history, folk art, nature, and flavours, in a place that combines tradition with hospitality.
