A stroll in Glossa

A stroll in Glossa

A traditional hamlet looking out over the sea

Glossa is the second largest hamlet of Skopelos. It is considered one of the most traditionally preserved hamlets of the Sporades, with a history dating back to medieval times. Amphitheatrically constructed about 250 meters above the port of Loutraki, it was strategically located, as it allowed residents to overlook the sea and protect themselves from pirate raids. From Glossa you can take in the lush green hillside and the view to Pilio and Skiathos.
The name’s origin remains a mystery. Some say that it comes from the tongue-like shape of the cape of the area (glossa is Greek for tongue), while others connect it to the first Minoan settlers and Knossos.
Glossa was the birthplace of important captain families of the 18th and 19th centuries, which explains the existence of the mansions that are still preserved in the hamlet’s centre. Many of them stand out for their wood-carved doors, painted ceilings, and well-preserved interiors, a testament to an era of prosperity and wealth. The hamlet’s old houses often preserve the traditional liakota, stone balconies where families sun-dry fruit and greens to this day.
Glossa was the core of the island’s agricultural life for centuries, with a strong tradition in olive cultivation and viticulture. In its kafenia and tavernas you can try traditional dishes, such as Skopelos cheese pie, lemonato lamb (cooked with lemon juice), and plum liqueur. Make a stop at the small craft shops for handmade ceramics and textiles.
As the sun sets, Glossa is painted in golden hues. If you are searching for a moment to create the perfect memory from Skopelos, walk up to the hamlet’s highest point. After exploring the cobbled streets, the magnificent view of Skiathos and the endless blue of the Aegean Sea is revealed.
