The Bridge of Arta

A legendary work of traditional architecture

In the heart of Epirus, above the waters of the Arachthos River, rises one of Greece’s most recognisable stone structures. Deeply bound to history and collective memory, the Bridge of Arta is a leading example of traditional bridge-building and will captivate you at first sight.
The bridge was built in its present form in the early 17th century and is attributed to craftsmen of the Ottoman period, who succeeded in creating a work of exceptional durability and aesthetic harmony. With four imposing arches and a total length of around 145 metres, it blends perfectly into the natural landscape.
The fame of the Bridge of Arta extends far beyond the boundaries of the region, thanks to the folk song of the same name that conveys a legend from the Greek popular tradition: “They built it all day long, and by night it would collapse”, until it was revealed that a sacrifice was needed for it to stand firm. The bridge symbolises the harsh price of creation and the conflict between duty and human love, conveying messages that resonate universally.
History and legend coexist harmoniously, creating a narrative that enchants and moves, without overshadowing the significance of the architectural work itself. The surrounding area, with the natural beauty of the Arachthos and its proximity to the historic town of Arta, is ideal for walks and gentle leisure activities throughout the year.
