Birdwatching on Lesvos Island

A paradise for bird lovers

Lesvos is one of the top destinations in Europe for birdwatching, with areas included in the Natura 2000 network. From Alykes (Salt Flats) and Kalloni Bay to the Vatera-Polichnitou Wetland, you will be fascinated by the island’s biodiversity, which is home to more than 330 species of birds.
The Vatera-Polichnitou Wetland is impressive, known for its warm waters, with more than 100 recorded bird species, such as flamingos, herons, storks and terns.
Another important point of interest is the Dipi-Larsos Wetland, almost entirely covered by dense and impenetrable reeds, where aquatic and saltwater plants coexist.
The Small Wetlands of Eressos-Western Lesvos attract migratory and aquatic birds during the wet spring season.
The Western Peninsula and Mount Olympus offer magnificent landscapes for hiking and wildlife observation.
Complete the experience with a visit to Kalloni Environmental Information Centre, where birdwatching activities and tours are organised. The Salt Flats of the Gulf are one of the most important wetlands in the Mediterranean, with more than 130 species of birds as well as a variety of aquatic organisms. The best observation periods are spring and autumn. The special observatories in the Gulf of Kalloni will give you the opportunity to watch thousands of migratory birds up close, in one of the most important migratory stations in the Mediterranean.
Every glance at Lesvos reveals the wonderful harmony between man and environment. Bird watching in particular is an invitation to discover the magic of ecosystems, learn about biodiversity and connect with the charm of the Mediterranean through the wings of birds.
