The area of Elliniko is located on the southern side of Athens, between Glyfada and Alimos. It offers easy access to the city centre and is in direct contact with the sea and Mount Hymettus, which towers behind it. For decades, Elliniko was associated with the historic airport of Athens, the main gateway to Greece. The airport closed in 2001, and the area is now being gradually transformed. This is the largest urban redevelopment project in Europe, creating a new smart city with marinas, beaches, hotels, residences, pedestrian areas, cycle paths, and many other facilities. Currently, the area is undergoing extensive development and the Riviera Tower is already under construction. This building will stand 200 metres tall and will be the tallest building in Athens. The first phase of the redevelopment, The Ellinikon Experience Park, is already open. This modern outdoor space, situated next to the old airport buildings, features fountains, trees, gardens, outdoor gyms, and carefully selected areas for dining and refreshments, making it ideal for families. Surrounding this new landscape, the neighbourhoods of Elliniko retain a tranquil, everyday character, with squares, local shops, and restaurants that exude a sense of authentic Athenian life. The proximity to Glyfada adds a cosmopolitan aura, while the connections to the tram and metro makes the area an ideal base for exploring the capital.
