Waterfalls Balta di Striga

A “hidden gem” of Zagori

In a lush green landscape that seems straight out of a fairy tale, the Waterfalls Balta di Striga are one of the most impressive natural destinations in Epirus. The water, the light and the dense forest create an idyllic experience.
Near Iliochori, the waterfalls are three and the tallest reach a height of 25 metres. They form natural pools with crystal-clear waters and are an ideal destination for those seeking authentic experiences in nature.
The name “Balta di Striga”, in Vlach, means “the little ovira (pool) of the cry”. According to local legend, a woman overwhelmed by grief after parting from her beloved decided to end her life by throwing herself from the waterfall. The sound of her cry is said to have been heard all the way to the village, giving the place its distinctive name.
The path leading to the waterfalls is well maintained and well signposted, passing through beeches, plane trees and flowing streams. The route has a moderate level of difficulty. During your visit, it is important to observe the necessary safety measures and, where needed, to seek the assistance of an experienced, certified guide.
The waters fall into a turquoise pool. During the summer months many visitors take a refreshing dip, while in spring the surrounding slopes are adorned with wildflowers, creating an enchanting scene ideal for photography and moments of tranquillity.
Explore one of Greece’s most beautiful natural treasures and let the magic of the waterfalls Balta di Striga transform your experience in Zagori.
