Water and Stone in Absolute Harmony
In an enchanting location in western Thessaly, just a few kilometres from Pyli in Trikala, the bridge and waterfall of Palaiokarya offer a rare experience, especially if you are seeking authentic contact with nature and tradition. The impressive stone bridge, dating back to around the mid-16th century, stretches harmoniously over the Palaiokaritis River, in a lush green gorge filled with plane trees, oak trees and wild vegetation.
With an arch span of approximately 19 metres and a total length of 26 metres, it is a masterpiece of traditional bridge-building and highlights the expertise of the Epirote master craftsmen of the time.
Behind the bridge, a waterfall approximately 12 metres high – created by a dam built in the 1970s – sends the river’s waters rushing into a natural pool. In front of it, a smaller waterfall, just two metres high, completes the idyllic landscape, which has become one of the most photographed spots in the area. The natural beauty, the historic character of the bridge and the sound of the water will offer you moments of tranquillity that will transport you back to another era.
Access is easy and safe, via an asphalt road leading from Pyli to the village of Kato Palaiokarya. The bridge is just 500 metres before the settlement, and there is signage to guide you easily. Take a gentle hike, always observing the necessary safety measures, and enjoy nature away from the noise of urban centres.
Palaiokarya promises images, sounds and emotions that remain etched in memory. Whether for a short excursion or as part of a longer journey through Thessaly, the area offers many reasons to visit.
