Skra Waterfalls and Emerald Lake

The secret oasis of Paiko

Start your adventure towards the mountainous region of Kilkis and discover one of the best-kept secrets of Mount Paiko: the Skra Waterfalls. Immerse yourself in a dense deciduous forest, crossed by the Megalo Rema (Kotza Dere). Starting with approximately 300 stone steps, follow the well-marked hiking trail and feel the absolute tranquillity offered by the environment.
The rich forest composition includes plane trees, oaks, beeches, chestnuts, and walnuts. Between the trunks, dense climbing plants grow, such as ivy, laurels, and clematis, creating a rare green paradise, home to several reptiles and birds. As you proceed, you will encounter small and large waterfalls in this beautiful, mixed forest.
Reach the central point of the route by crossing a picturesque wooden bridge that will reveal the famous Emerald Lake (or Blue Lake). The almost surreal, intense turquoise colour of its waters is due to the high concentration of calcium carbonate and other minerals, which create an impressive natural phenomenon. Admire the main waterfall cascading into the lake, offering a dreamlike setting. The place looks like it came out of a fairy tale with elves and fairies and is ideal for enjoying a quiet picnic or simply taking photos.
The area around the village of Skra also has deep historical significance, as it was the site of the famous Battle of Skra during World War I. This coexistence of wild nature and historical memory makes the visit even more interesting.
