Rouvas Forest and Zaros Lake

Rouvas Forest and Zaros Lake

Walk through the heart of Mt Psiloritis

On the southern slopes of Mt Psiloritis, near the village of Zaros, lies one of the most interesting forests of Crete: Rouvas Forest. The landscape there alternates between ravines, oak-covered slopes, and cypress trees that compose an image of untamed beauty and serenity.
You can start hiking at Zaros Lake, a small artificial lake with clear waters, lush vegetation, ducks, and fish. From there, the E4 European path will take you uphill through the Rouvas gorge — a narrow passage with springs, shady slopes, and impressive rocks — on your way towards the plateau. The journey takes about three hours and offers panoramic views of Mt Psiloritis and southern Crete. It is recommended you observe all basic safety measures and, where necessary, are accompanied by an experienced, certified guide.
The mountains around the forest are home to rare and protected species of Cretan fauna, such as the Cretan wildcat and the Cretan goat or kri-kri, a symbol of the island’s wild nature.
Beyond the landscape, the area’s products are also worth your time: Rouvas honey, olive oil, Mt Psiloritis herbs, and traditional cheeses produced by the residents of Zaros. The tavernas around the lake offer local flavours in a location that combines the coolness of the mountain with the serenity of the water.
Follow the trails of Mt Psiloritis and let nature reveal its secrets to you.
