Mt Parnassus National Park

Mt Parnassus National Park

A mountain ecosystem of unique natural beauty

On Mt Parnassus, one of the highest mountains in Central Greece, you will find one of the country's first and most important National Parks. Established in 1938, it covers an area of approximately 3,600 hectares. It is no coincidence that Mt Parnassus is woven into the great myths of antiquity and that battles were fought here during the Greek War of Independence. History, culture, and nature converge on these slopes, inviting you to discover them firsthand.
The natural wealth of the area is truly impressive. Towering peaks, captivating gorges, famous caves, dense forests of fir and black pine, and alpine meadows form a sanctuary for wildlife where nature finds the perfect refuge.
You will encounter rare plants with vibrant colours that have long attracted botanists, travellers, and naturalists from around the globe. The more than 1,400 species include dozens of plants endemic to the area and Greece, including six steno-endemic species – plants that grow nowhere else on Earth. Notable examples include the knapweed of the Muses and the Greek  Peony. The wealth of fauna includes over 100 bird species, various mammals, dozens of bat species inhabiting the caves, and rare endemic invertebrates.
For nature lovers, hikers, and mountaineers, Mt Parnassus National Park provides an ideal environment for outdoor activities. An extensive network of trails criss-crosses the mountain, offering options for every preference and skill level. If you are looking for something more accessible, you can follow the paths leading to Delphi and the mythical Corycian Cave, where Pan and the Nymphs were worshipped in ancient times. For the more experienced, there are challenging climbing and mountaineering routes toward the high peaks, such as Liakoura, at an elevation of 2,457 metres.
All mountain activities should be conducted with respect for the environment and in adherence to safety regulations. Whenever necessary, seek the guidance of certified guides, and your exploration of the National Park will reward you with an unforgettable experience.
