Island of Chrysi

An isolated heaven on earth

A few kilometres south of Ierapetra lies one of the most exotic landscapes of Crete: the island of Chrysi, named after its sand, that reflects the sunlight. Locals also call it Gaidouronisi and it never fails to make an impression, thanks to its crystal clear waters and its endless beaches with their distinctive golden sand.
Chrysi is a Natura 2000 protected area and it stands out for its unique cedar forest, one of the largest of its kind in the Mediterranean. A walk in the island’s hinterland — if seasonal restrictions allow for such a stroll — reveals trails among cedar trees, sand dunes, and aromatic plants in a rare ecosystem of great environmental value.
The beaches of Chrysi are an impressive landscape, with countless tiny shells and water that is ideal for swimming. Besides the seaside experience, the island is also home to the small chapel of Agios Nikolaos. It dates back to the 13th century, although it has undergone more recent interventions, while there are indications that it was constructed on the site of an ancient building, quite possibly a sanctuary.
Boats offer access Chrysi and they set off daily from Ierapetra. This excursion is an ideal choice for those seeking to relax in a landscape of untouched beauty.
Attention: Visits to the island are subject to environmental regulations. In recent years, restrictions have been implemented to protect the cedar forest, so the hours at which you can access and use the beach may vary. Before setting off, please check which zones you are allowed to remain in and what the regulations are for swimming off the boat.
