The Island of Lake Pamvotida

The Island of Lake Pamvotida

An unnamed island in the lake of Ioannina

The island of Lake Pamvotida, the second inhabited lake island of Greece, will impress you with its authentic Epirus character and its calm, seductive atmosphere. Access is possible by small boats that depart regularly from the pier of Ioannina, offering a short but enchanting ride over the calm waters of the lake.
The traditional settlement of the island, with cobbled streets, stone houses and courtyards full of flowers, maintains the Epirus architecture unchanged. Each corner conveys the atmosphere of a bygone era, when authenticity and hospitality were the core of local life.
On the island you will find seven monasteries. The Convent of Agios Nikolaos of Philanthropenoi, which constituted one of the most important monastic communities in Greece, is the most prominent one. On their walls priceless Byzantine and post-Byzantine frescoes are preserved. They are unique examples of Epirus hagiographic art, which testify to the spiritual flourishing of the area during the centuries of Ottoman rule.
Of particular interest is the Museum of Ali Pasha, in the cell of the Monastery of Agios Panteleimonas where the powerful pasha of Ioannina met his end in 1822. It hosts exhibits that connect the island with an important page of Greek history and its atmosphere will take you to a time of power, wealth and historical reversals.
Complete your tour with a stroll through the picturesque alleys, among traditional workshops and small tavernas where you can taste local specialties, such as frogs' legs, eels and fish from the lake. Visit the island and enjoy the tranquility of the landscape, the cultural heritage and the human warmth that make it a unique experience destination.
