An impressive and easily accessible passage
Imbros Gorge, in the south of Chania, is one of the most beautiful and easily accessible gorges of Crete. You will start the hike from the village of Imbros, at an altitude of about 780 metres, and end up in the village of Komitades, near Sfakia. The route is part of the E4 European Path and takes about two hours. It is about 8 km long and passes through parts of an old Venetian cobbled street.
In many places the walls of the gorge are so close that they are only two meters away, creating an impressive narrow passage. It is important to follow basic safety instructions, and if you wish, you can also contact an experienced, certified guide.
The passage of Imbros was a historical path of the Sfakians, leading to Chania, but also an escape route of the Allies to the south coast after the Battle of Crete in 1941.
The nearby area of Askifos, which lies on the slopes of the White Mountains, played an important role in all Cretan revolutions. Today you can find there, the small War Museum of Askifos, with a collection of weapons and relics of the period.
In the traditional cafés of the plateau you can enjoy raki, salads with wild chicory picked by the locals, traditional rusks from Sfakia and many traditional delicacies.
After the descent, you can head from Komitades to the beaches at Sfakia or Frangokastello, continuing a journey that combines mountain, history and sea.
