An impressive descent from Ochi Mountain to the Aegean Sea
Discover one of Evia’s most spectacular hiking routes and one of the finest landscapes of Mount Ochi. Dimosari Gorge offers an exhilarating descent that begins in the rugged terrain of Mt Ochi (Petrokanalo area, at 954 metres elevation), winds through the lush, green gorge, and ends at the beautiful Kalliana Beach, with the crystal-clear waters of the Aegean Sea. The gorge is a true natural monument and part of the Natura 2000 network.
Along its course, the river forms small waterfalls and vathres (natural pools), passing through the village of Lenosei, where the famous stone stairway—an old cobblestone path used by locals to travel to Karystos before modern roads were built—can be found. Oaks, maples, chestnuts, and heather grow at the higher points of the gorge, while plane trees and willows dominate the lower areas. Among them, rare plant species bloom.
The changing landscapes create magical scenes that you won’t tire of photographing, all while listening to the birdsong: dippers, eagle owls, and tawny owls frequent the gorge, and high above, you may spot short-toed snake eagles, Bonelli’s eagles, and other birds. There’s also a good chance of encountering water snakes and freshwater turtles.
The route is 10 km long, so you’ll need to arrange transportation to the starting point and from the finish. Depending on your stops, the hike takes about five hours before you reach the enchanting beach for a refreshing swim. Remember, it’s best to be accompanied by a certified guide and to follow all safety guidelines.
