Amidst centuries-old plane trees and running waters
At the foot of Mt Helmos, at an altitude of approximately 697 m, Planitero is built amphitheatrically above one of the most impressive plane forests in Greece. Here, the springs of the Aroanios River gush through the rocks, creating a landscape filled with water, shade, and constant motion—a true natural paradise.
The centuries-old plane trees, with trunks that in some places exceed 4 m in diameter, form a living canopy of green. Among them, traditional watermills and nerotrives (traditional water-powered laundries for washing woven fabrics) have been preserved. In fact, one of these is still operational, serving as a reminder of an era when water was the driving force of local life.
The area is part of the Natura 2000 network, a fact that underlines its unique ecological value. Marked trails lead from Planitero towards Elatophyto and Mazi, as well as sections of the E4 European long-distance path towards Lousoi and Kalavryta. Hiking through the plane forest constantly reveals new facets of the landscape.
Around the springs, local tavernas operate, famous for their local trout. Whether grilled, fried, or sautéed with fresh butter and almonds, it is the perfect accompaniment to the scenery. Some establishments even have their own fish farms, offering a rare connection to the source of the ingredients.
A visit to Planitero is ideal all year round, with summer and autumn offering welcome coolness and vibrant colours. We recommend wearing comfortable shoes and taking the time to stroll along the springs.
