Nature as a Sculptor
Chios is not only an island of medieval settlements and citrus fruits. It is one of the most interesting geotopes of the Aegean and will take you millions of years back to geological prehistory. Its enormous geological value lies in the fact that you can find here the oldest sedimentary rocks and ammonite fossils (marine organisms) in Greece. As you tour the island, you will also notice impressive faults and many karst formations, i.e. geological forms created when water erodes limestone rocks, forming caves, sinkholes, dolines and underground tunnels.
Beneath the surface of Chios there is a network of caves that offer a unique spectacle. Do not forget to visit the Cave of Olympi, in the southern part, near the homonymous mastic village. There, stalactites and stalagmites compose a spectacular sight. Further north, there is the Cave of Agio Gala (Holy Milk), which is essentially a cluster of three caves. The archaeological findings found there go back to the Neolithic era.
