The first image you will encounter is picturesque Patitiri, the harbour and capital. Narrow lanes, traditional houses and little tavernas by the water serve as the perfect introduction to the island. A short uphill path leads to the Chora, the former capital of Alonnisos, where the medieval castle gazes out over the open sea from above. Sea lovers will not be disappointed as tapering coastlines with emerald waters await. These shores also serve as a refuge for the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus), which is one of the rarest and most endangered mammals in the Mediterranean. The sensitivity of local fishermen and state intervention led to the creation of the National Marine Park of Alonnisos - Northern Sporades, which was the first marine park in Greece and remains one of the largest in Europe.
