History, faith and sea light on an island that never ceases to charm
Aegina is a unique and beloved destination near Athens. It is the largest island in the Argo-Saronic Gulf and is renowned for its clean seas, picturesque villages, significant cultural and archaeological monuments, as well as Aegina pistachios, a product of Protected Designation of Origin with international fame. The geographical position of Aegina, between Athens and the Peloponnese, established it as a crossroads of civilisations and trade since antiquity. Aegina was one of the most important city-states of the classical era, and it was where the first Greek coins were minted. In modern history, it served as the first temporary capital of the newly formed Greek state in 1828, where Governor Ioannis Kapodistrias constructed the first neoclassical public buildings in Greece. Thanks to these, the town of Aegina retains a grand character to this day. The traditional façades of the houses, with bold colours and iron balconies featuring intricate designs and corbels, transport visitors to an atmosphere of bygone eras. The main commercial street, Aphaias Street, running parallel to the coastal road, teems with life and offers an authentic experience of an island market. Despite its small size, Aegina hides an inexhaustible supply of natural and cultural beauties. Monasteries such as Panagia Chrysoleontissa and Agios Nektarios attract crowds of pilgrims, while the Temple of Athena Aphaia impresses with its location and architecture. Charming villages like Agia Marina, Vagia and Souvala, small surrounding islets and picturesque fishing villages with tavernas by the waves offer authentic moments of relaxation and exploration. Aegina is a year-round destination. It invites you to experience its history, wander through its alleys, find peace and, of course, take with you some of the best pistachios in the world!
