The border gem of the Aegean

At the easternmost tip of Greece lies one of the smallest yet most charming islands of the Dodecanese. Kastellorizo (or Megisti, as it was called in antiquity) has a long history, starting from the early years of the Neolithic era. The island was known as Megisti through the centuries until the Middle Ages, when the Knights of St John built Castello Rosso on the peak of the reddish rock above the harbour. This castle, one of the strongest fortresses in the Aegean with double walls and battlements, ultimately gave its name to the island.
The first image you encounter upon arriving at the picture-perfect harbour is captivating. Red, yellow, blue, and green two- and three-storey neoclassical mansions with tiled roofs, balconies, and beautiful windows, frame the small natural cove and gaze proudly out to sea. Their colourful façades are mirrored in the transparent waters, creating a painter’s canvas both in and out of the water: a truly mesmerising image.
This island with an area of just 9 square kilometres became internationally famous thanks to the Oscar-winning Italian movie ‘Mediterraneo’, filmed here in 1991. Nevertheless, it has remained untouched by mass tourism and promises to offer you absolute relaxation and the most peaceful holidays of your life. Here you will not find sandy beaches, but rocks and small piers ideal for diving into the deep blue waters.
On the fringes of Greece, Kastellorizo stands colourful at the edge of the Aegean Sea. The island is perfect for refreshing swims, good food, walking along traditional paths, and moments of total serenity.
