The flower of the Cyclades

Ios, or Nios, as the locals call their island, is situated between Santorini, Paros, and Naxos, and is full of coves and endless sandy beaches. It is one of the most beautiful islands of the Cyclades and has gained an international reputation for its nightlife, while being graced by stunning natural beauty and a rich history.
According to ancient tradition, Ios was the birthplace of Homer's mother and the burial place of the great epic poet himself. It owes its name to Ion, which means flower, as the island was once covered in blossoms.
Ios makes an impression from the very first moment, with a picturesque Hora that extends to the port of Ormos. The bright white houses, the charming narrow streets, its twelve windmills, and the churches with their arched bell towers and blue domes create a unique community.
The highest point of Hora is home to the most significant of the more than 300 churches of Ios, the church of Panagia Gremiotissa (Virgin of the Cliff), literally perched on the edge of the cliff, offering a breathtaking view of the sea. The church’s panigyri traditional festival on August 15th is one of the most beautiful on the island, featuring a procession of the icon through Hora and a traditional celebration with island songs and dancing until dawn.
