Mount Athos

The Avaton and the possibility of a sea tour for all

The monastic state of Athos constitutes the spiritual heart of Orthodoxy, a self-governed part of the Greek territory in Halkidiki. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Mount Athos is home to twenty majestic monasteries and a multitude of sketes and cells, with over a thousand years of history. The unique spirituality of the place is also due to the fact that it is dedicated entirely to the Virgin Mary, which is why it is called "her garden".
Access is only by sea, mainly from Ouranoupoli or Ierissos, with the final destination being the port of Daphne or the monastic piers (arsanades). Each monastery stands out for its unique architecture, rich history, and one-of-a-kind relics, which render a visit a distinct spiritual experience.
The ancient and strict tradition of "Avaton" explicitly forbids the entry and stay of women on the entire Athonite peninsula. Any violation constitutes a criminal offence. However, for all interested parties, including women, there is the possibility of a "sea pilgrimage". Boats depart daily from Ouranoupoli – the last secular port before Mount Athos – offering an enchanting cruise along the western coastline of Athos. From a distance of at least 500 m, you can admire the imposing architecture of the monasteries, which often resemble fortresses perched on rocks, as well as the wild natural landscape.
For men wishing to visit the interior of the monastic state and stay overnight in the monasteries, the issuance of a special written permit, the Diamonitirion, is required from the Mount Athos Pilgrims' Bureau. The number of permits is limited. Hospitality within the monasteries is provided free of charge, in accordance with Athonite tradition.
