Holy Monastery of Kipinas

An “eagle’s nest” in the Tzoumerka mountains

Perched on a sheer rock face, the Holy Monastery of Kipinas quite literally hangs above the gorge of the Kalarrytiko river, offering an experience that will move and captivate you.
The monastery’s architecture is truly remarkable: its katholikon has as its roof the rock itself, carved so as to form a dome. A wooden hanging bridge, which in the past was movable, connects the monastery to the path. The fact that once the bridge could be ‘raised’, allowed the monks to isolate themselves in times of danger.
To enter the monastery, you will follow a path carved into the rock and cross over the precipice via the wooden bridge, experiencing a unique sense of adventure and reverence. Inside the monastery, you will find 17th–18th-century frescoes, a gilded wooden iconostasis and icons that highlight the spiritual vitality of Epirus tradition.
An additional element that deepens the mystery of Kipinas is the cave that begins from the narthex of the church, which is not accessible. It is approximately 240 metres long and in the past was used as a refuge, especially during Ottoman rule.
The Monastery of Kipinas is dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos, while it celebrates each year the Friday of the Life-Giving Spring, making it an important religious destination.
This enchanting “eagle’s nest”, as it has been described, is not merely a monument of faith. It is a place where human creation is harmoniously combined with wild nature. Experience a visit filled with awe, serenity and spiritual reflection, letting the rock and the sky captivate you.

The Kipina Monastery is located 6.5 kilometres from Kalarrytes, directly on the main paved road leading to the village of Syrrako. Although access to the parking area is easy and entirely via a passable road, the final part of the route requires walking along a narrow path carved into the rock face.
