A distinctive volcanic landscape in the Saronic Gulf
Across from Poros, on the Methana Peninsula the sea and the land make up a distinctive natural landscape. While primarily known as a seaside destination, Methana also attracts hikers, nature lovers, and visitors seeking moments of wellness. Trails crisscross the peninsula, leading through hills, small valleys, and time-forgotten villages, unveiling a terrain of great geological interest shaped by centuries of volcanic activity.
At the heart of the peninsula lies the Methana volcano, part of the South Aegean volcanic arc. The area’s volcanic nature has been noted since antiquity in the writings of Strabo, Pausanias, and Ovid. Today, more than 30 volcanic formations have been recorded, the most famous being the crater above the village of Kameni (Kaimeni) Hora. Approximately 50 metres deep and 100 metres in diameter, the volcanic cone rises to an elevation of 425 metres.
The ascent to the crater follows a trail carved into volcanic rock, offering a truly unique hiking experience. After about thirty minutes, visitors are rewarded with dramatic lava formations that stretch all the way to the sea, creating what locals call the “Black Cape.”
The experience is perfectly rounded off with a visit to Methana’s natural thermal springs, where warm mineral waters—often exceeding 30°C—provide relaxation and rejuvenation in a setting of outstanding natural beauty.
