An uninhabited island with secrets spanning millennia
Are you looking for moments of relaxation away from the crowds in the Argosaronic? Then all you need to do is explore Dokos, a small island of great natural beauty located between Hydra and the coast of Argolis.
It is uninhabited and is a destination of archaeological interest. The history of Dokos is long and has not yet been fully investigated. A settlement from prehistoric times has been identified there, as well as a shipwreck dating from 2700–2200 BC, one of the oldest ever discovered in the world. It was also the first shipwreck in Greece to be investigated using advanced technological methods, yielding important finds relating to seafaring and trade in the Aegean more than 4,000 years ago.
In antiquity, the island was known as Aperopia, as it offered limitless views to its inhabitants. It acquired the name Dokos in Byzantine times, as it served as a passage point to Hydra and Ermioni. Owing to its strategic position, a fortified settlement was created there in the 7th century and used as a stronghold. During the period of the Greek Revolution, it served as an anchorage for the Hydriots.
Today, you will encounter a landscape full of olive trees and be charmed by the turquoise waters of the sea. You can go hiking, starting from Skintos Cove and making your way to the island’s summit, with intermediate stops at the castle and a stone lighthouse. The view will reward you, since from almost any point you can gaze out towards Hydra, Argolis and the open sea.
If you are keen on yachting, you will immediately understand why it is such a popular destination for boats.
Visit Dokos and experience the unique atmosphere of a deserted island with a rich history and a serene landscape.
