The Wild Beauty of Pindos mountain range
The Tzoumerka Mountains, also known as Athamanika Mountains, rise majestically along the borders of Epirus with Thessaly, constituting one of the most rugged and unspoiled mountainous areas of Greece. With their highest peak, Kakarditsa, reaching 2,429 metres, the mountain range offers a landscape of unparalleled natural beauty that enchants every visitor.
A Terrain Sculpted by Water
The terrain of the mountains is defined by great altitude differences and deep folds, which are due to long-term soil erosion. Numerous streams originate in these folds, feeding the Acheloos River to the east and the Arachthos River to the west. Water plays a leading role everywhere, forming impressive waterfalls, such as the famous ones in the settlement of Theodoriana and the village of Katarraktis, which are a pole of attraction for nature lovers.
Natural Environment
The slopes of Tzoumerka mountains are covered by dense fir forests, while higher altitudes are marked by bare alpine zones. Due to the inaccessible nature of the area, biodiversity remains almost intact. The flora is particularly rich, including over 500 species of plants. The ideal time to visit is spring, when the alpine meadows are flooded with colours, home to rare wildflowers such as orchids and the endemic Solenanthus albanicus.
Tradition and Adventure
Beyond its natural beauty, the region is renowned for its stone villages, such as Syrrako and Kalarrytes, which feature traditional architecture and arched bridges (including the emblematic Plaka Bridge). For adventure lovers, Tzoumerka mountains offer unique rafting experiences in the Arachthos River, mountaineering and hiking on trails leading to the heart of wild Epirus.
