Panta Vrechi Gorge

The water curtains of Evrytania

A true miracle of nature lies hidden between the villages of Roska and Doliana in Evrytania. In the narrow passage formed by the Krikelopotamos (or Krikelliotis) River, waters descending from the steep slopes of Mount Kaliakouda fall to meet it. This creates the unique water curtains and a sense of continuous rainfall, which gives the location its name, Panta Vrechi — which means “always raining”. The landscape is breathtaking from all perspectives: imposing cliffs, natural pools for swimming, small waterfalls, and lush vegetation offer a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Visiting Panta Vrechi requires river trekking and is an exhilarating adventure. The trek is best enjoyed during the summer months when the water level inside the gorge is low. It is refreshingly cool even during a heatwave, and you can observe the aquatic plants hanging from every crevice, embracing the rocks. You will be captivated by the tiny rainbows that form in the mist and the never-ending sound of the water.
The starting point is at the Krikelopotamos bridge, which is reached via a dirt road. From there, it is a 30 to 40-minute hike (each way) through ice-cold waters that can be waist-deep at certain spots. Be sure to equip yourself with hiking shoes, swimwear, a towel, a hat, a first-aid kit, and a change of clothes and shoes in a waterproof backpack.
River trekking requires careful attention, as nature is always unpredictable. The safe period to visit Panta Vrechi is generally from mid-May through September. Always check the weather forecast and never attempt the crossing if it has rained recently.
An off-road vehicle will get you to the starting point more comfortably and extra care is needed during the hike as the river stones are slippery. If you are not experienced, it is highly recommended you contact a certified outdoor activity agency to ensure you enjoy this unique piece of Evrytanian nature safely.
