Skiathos as a landscape of national value

Rare ecological wealth

Skiathos stands out for more than its beaches and cultural heritage; it is also a destination of internationally recognised ecological value. In the southern part of the island, the area of Koukounaries – Strofylia has been included in the Natura 2000 European network as a Site of Community Importance (SAC). It covers more than 88.8 hectares and is considered a unique treasure, as it is the only Umbrella pine (Pinus pinea) forest on a Mediterranean island that combines forest, wetland, and marine zones into a single ecosystem.
At the centre of the protected area is the Strofylia lagoon, covering an area of 2.35 hectares, which is linked to the sea and is home to a number of protected species of fauna and flora. The forest around it consists of Pinus halepensis, Pinus pinea, and sclerophyllous shrubs, while the ecosystem offers shelter to aquatic birds, fish, and marine organisms. The area has been designated a Wildlife Refuge and a Natural Monument, highlighting its particular importance.
A strict legal framework protects the area: Construction and interventions are prohibited within Natura 2000 zones, while only activities compatible with ecosystem conservation are allowed. You can enjoy gentle hikes along marked trails, bird watching and low-impact sea activities, while always showing respect for nature.
Discover Skiathos through the landscape of Koukounaries and Strofylia; a place of national and European importance, where natural beauty meets responsibility for the environment.
