A Rendezvous with the History of Spetses
The Armata is not just a historical commemoration, but an immersive experience that takes you back to 1822—one of the most dramatic and emotionally charged moments you can relive on this Saronic island. It is the annual celebration of the Naval Battle of Spetses, which took place on September 8, 1822. On that day, the island’s naval crews, together with the fleets of Hydra and Psara, bravely resisted the Ottoman fleet that attempted to break the siege of Nafplio, helping to maintain the blockade and ultimately leading to the city’s surrender to the Greek revolutionaries.
During the week of the Armata, culminating on the second Saturday of Septembre, the Old Harbour of Spetses comes alive with concerts, traditional dances, theatrical performances, exhibitions, and events for all ages.
The highlight of the celebrations is the reenactment of the naval battle: the Armata, a replica of the Ottoman flagship built by local craftsmen, is set ablaze at dusk in a spectacular display of fireworks and flares. A live narration of the historical events accompanies the spectacle, transporting you to the pivotal moments of 1822.
Before and after the reenactment, you can stroll through the historic Old Harbour, visit the Church of Panagia Armata—dedicated to the symbolic intervention of the Virgin Mary during the battle—and experience the vibrant atmosphere of a celebration that honours the island’s memory and traditions.
