Akrotiri of Thera

The Pompeii of the Aegean in the Heart of Santorini

A journey through the archaeological site of Akrotiri is a truly awe-inspiring voyage through time. Buildings and artefacts, preserved beneath a thick layer of volcanic material, have remained intact for millennia, exactly like Pompeii.
Peak and Destruction
Life in the city came to an abrupt halt in the final quarter of the 17th century BC. Powerful earthquakes forced the inhabitants to abandon the city before the devastating volcanic eruption. During the Middle and Late Bronze Age, the settlement was one of the most important urban and commercial centres in the Aegean. It was a bustling city of 20 hectares, boasting remarkable organisation, a drainage system, and multi-storey buildings. Excavations have unearthed 5,000 vessels, tools, and furniture, while the impressive frescoes represent the earliest examples of monumental painting in the Greek world.
Architecture and Expertise
The buildings of Akrotiri are examples of exquisite architecture. Grand buildings with carved façades once housed communal services, while private residences had workshops and storage areas. The use of imported materials proves the close ties with Minoan Crete, Cyprus, Egypt, and Syria.
The construction skills of the inhabitants are evident in their use of seismic technology, such as the wooden framework made from precious Cretan timber. Gypsum slabs from Knossos were laid on the floors over a base of crushed purple oyster shells, while the main building material came from the quarries of Thera. The expertise and aesthetic sensibility of the inhabitants were evident in every activity, from urban planning to daily life, making Akrotiri an eternal monument to human civilisation.
