A Journey to Crete’s Exotic Paradises
The Prefecture of Hania, with its 350-kilometre coastline and over 80 beaches, boasts some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the Mediterranean. Three destinations stand out globally for their pristine beauty, rare geomorphology, and crystal-clear waters, offering an authentic Cretan hospitality experience.
Falasarna
On the northwestern coast, the expansive sandy area of Falasarna comprises five consecutive beaches. Pachia Ammos, with its golden sand and hints of pink from crushed seashells, is considered one of the ten best beaches in Europe. It is fully serviced, with sun loungers, beach volleyball courts, and water sports facilities, while its sunset is considered captivating. A short distance away, the archaeological site of ancient Falasarna, with its carved throne and the ruins of the Temple of Artemis, offers a unique historical journey through time.
Elafonisi
About 80km southwest of Hania, Elafonisi is enchanting, with its shallow lagoon and exotic pink sand. This peninsula creates the feeling of being a separate island, offering up turquoise waters that are rarely more than half a metre deep. While the eastern side is serviced and bustling with activity, the sand dunes lead to the pristine Kedrodasos (Cedar Forest), a protected 11-hectare area with age old cedar trees that come right up to the shore, the ideal location for anyone seeking complete isolation.
Balos and Gramvousa
Balos Lagoon, situated at the northwestern tip, is the ultimate jewel of Crete. With white, powder-like sand and emerald waters, the landscape resembles an exotic landscape painting. Access is either via a dirt road and a hike, or by boat from Kissamos, which also visits Gramvousa with its imposing Venetian castle. The beach is not serviced, so visitors should bring the necessary sun protection equipment.
These beaches are part of the Natura network and seamlessly blend rare natural beauty with historical heritage, offering a holistic travel experience that surpasses all expectations under the Cretan sun.
