The most iconic beaches of Crete
At the western end of Crete two of the most recognisable landscapes of the island, Elafonisi and Balos, are situated. Two beaches different from each other, but equally stunning, with great ecological value.
Elafonisi, in the southwest of Chania, is a small island joined to the mainland by a narrow strip of sand. The shallow waters and the characteristic pink sand, coming from shell fragments, create a unique landscape. The area is protected by the Natura 2000 network and is a refuge for sea lilies and other rare plants, predators, seabirds and the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus).
Just before you arrive, it is worth making a stop at the Convent of Chrysoskalitissa, which is built on a rock, with a breathtaking view of the sea.
Due to its popularity, Elafonisi receives a very large number of visitors during the summer months. Visit with respect to the delicate ecosystem, avoiding sand movement and shell collection, and admire one of the most beautiful sunsets on Crete.
In the northwest, Balos will impress you with its wild beauty: a lagoon with exotic colours, between Gramvousa and Cape Tigani. The islet of Gramvousa, with its Venetian fortress, completes the image of a place that combines history and natural majesty.
You can reach Balos either by car, following part of a dirt road and then a short hike, or by boat from the port of Kissamos. From above, the view to the lagoon is breathtaking and the landscape is unforgettable to every visitor.
