On the paths of myth and nature
Ithaca offers peaceful beaches for relaxing swims and a close connection with nature.
Filiatro, a short distance from Vathy, is one of the island’s easiest-to-reach and most popular beaches. With pebbles, crystal-clear waters and natural shade from the trees, it is an ideal choice for spending long hours by the sea. In the area, you can also visit Dexa, a tranquil beach believed to have been the Homeric harbour of Phorcys.
At Gidaki, considered the most beautiful beach on the island, you will find turquoise waters and white pebbles. You can reach it either by boat from Vathy or on foot via a hiking trail, which helps limit crowds and preserves its distinctive character.
Platia Ammos is one of the most impressive beaches on the island. With white pebbles and dramatic cliffs, it offers truly stunning photo opportunities. Access is via steps or by sea, which requires a little effort, but your time on the shore will reward you. In the bay of Afales, you will also find the beaches of Kaminia, Myrtera, Alykes, Pera Pigadi and others, which can be reached either by challenging footpaths or by sea.
On the northern side of the island, Afales stands out for its dramatic scenery and deep blue waters, and is ideal if you are looking for more untouched shores and seclusion. Sarakiniko, with its white rocks and clear waters, combines wild beauty with relatively easy access, while Skinos, a sheltered cove, is perfect for enjoying peace and a relaxing swim.
Near Stavros, in the north of the island, Polis Beach has great archaeological interest and views of the small islet of Lazareto. It owes its name to the ancient city which, according to legend, lies submerged beneath the waters of the bay. On the northern side of the bay, you will find the historic Cave of Loizos, which was an important centre of worship in antiquity.
