From the Inner Island to the Outer Island
Right in the heart of Astypalea, a narrow neck of land less than 100m wide "divides" the island in two: the eastern (Mesa Nisi, meaning Inner Island) and western (Exo Nisi, meaning Outer Island) wings. On either side, you’ll discover a wealth of beaches of every size, both pebbly and sandy, inviting you to cool off in the deep blue waters of the Aegean.
On Mesa Nisi, very close to the "narrowing", you will find the double sandy beach of Steno, with tamarisk trees for shade and a snack bar. Nearby and accessible on foot (5 minutes), you will find the quiet and secluded beach of Plakes, with fine white pebbles. At Schinondas and Agrilidi, you will find shade beneath the tamarisk trees. In the bay of Vai, you will come across the sandy beaches of Vai and Chrysi Ammos — be sure to bring your own umbrella.
On Exo Nisi, you will see the popular sandy beaches of Vatses and Kaminakia, which feature tamarisk trees and places to eat. The pebbly beach of Agios Ioannis is secluded and reached via a footpath. Far from the crowds, with tamarisk trees for shade and views of the Castle of the Hora, is the pebbly serviced beach of Agios Konstantinos.
In the north-western corner of Astypalea, in Panormos Bay, lies the large white-pebbled beach of the same name, as well as the beaches of Valani and Landes, which can be reached by road.
Another option, especially if you want more peace and quiet, is Pachia Ammos beach on Exo Nisi, accessible only via a footpath or by boat.
