A Journey Through the Maniot Coasts of Stone and Sun
Areopoli is surrounded by coves and sea caves sculpted by time. The beaches in the area possess their own authentic Mani character, offering ideal respite between excursions to the stone towers and the cypresses that punctuate the horizon.
Oitylo Bay
Three distinct destinations coexist in the same bay. Limeni (5km), the port of Areopoli, impresses with the Tower of the Mavromichalis family. It features a rocky landscape with a sandy seabed, ideal for snorkelling, and access is via the platform at the Cistern. Karavostasi (8km), the old Little Algiers for pirates, is a unserviced beach with pebbles and shallow waters. Finally, Tsipa in Neo Itylo (7km) is the only serviced beach with a beach bar, offering a wide variety of accommodation and amenities.
The Diros Area
At Diros Bay (8km), your swim can be combined with a visit to the renowned caves. Pyrgos Dirou beach, located directly below the caves, is accessible only on foot via steps and a path. Adjacent to it lies Diros beach, offering the natural shade of the tamarisk trees and a beach with large pebbles, deepening gradually without startling swimmers.
Eastern Mani
On the side of the Laconian Gulf, two beaches deserve your attention. Skoutari (20km) boasts crystal-clear waters and a sandy beach shaded by a 12th-century Byzantine church. Skopa beach in Kotronas (15 km) is known as the double beach, as a strip of land forms two pebble beaches, while the hidden Nisaki (Little Island) conceals the secluded Sykia cove for absolute privacy.
Whether you seek history in Limeni or tranquillity in Skoutari, the beaches surrounding Areopoli offer a complete experience. It is advisable to always have water and equipment with you, as the area retains its authentic character and remains largely unexplored.
