The old capital reborn through love
One of the best preserved medieval settlements of the Aegean, the Old Village of Alonnisos is built on the top of a hill to ensure protection from pirate raids. The location offers unobstructed views of the sea and the surrounding islands of the Sporades, while the cobbled streets and the whitewashed houses recount centuries-old tales.
The settlement was once the capital of Alonnisos and was continuously inhabited until the earthquake of 1965. The residents then moved closer to the port, in Patitiri, but the Old Village was revived through the love of the locals and artists who restored the old houses with respect for tradition. Today it serves as an open museum dedicated to traditional architecture and island culture.
The heart of the settlement is dominated by the Castle of Chora, which was built by the Venetians in the 14th century and was reinforced during the Ottoman era. Its ruins remain imposing, offering a superb panoramic view of the Aegean Sea and the surrounding islands. From there, on a clear day, one can discern the islands of Skopelos and Skiathos, and even Mount Pelion.
