A traditional hamlet, untouched by time
Hora on Skopelos is one of the best-preserved traditional hamlets of the Aegean, having received protected status in 1978. The authentic island architecture, its harmonious connection with nature, the cobbled streets, the colourful shutters, and the courtyards with bougainvilleas compose a unique backdrop.
One of the most beautiful routes starts in Pigadaki, just above the port. Heading uphill to the medieval ruins of the Venetian Castle, from which the Ghisi family once ruled, you will come across parts of the walls that bear witness to times past.
Descending through the narrow streets of Hora, take a moment outside Vakratsa Mansion in the neighbourhood of Agios Michail. The building is a typical example of the architecture of Skopelos mansions and used to belong to the Vakratsa family. It currently operates as a museum, exhibiting family artefacts, paintings, costumes, and personal heirlooms. A little further along basks the residence of the writer Pavlos Nirvanas, highlighting the wealth of the island’s cultural identity.
Another exciting route is the ascent from Panagitsa tou Pirgou (Our Lady of the Tower) to the castle; a combination of steps, narrow streets, and stunning panoramic views. Panagitsa, the church of the Presentation of the Theotokos, dates back to 1660. It is built in the cruciform style and its interior features 18th and 19th century icons, as well as a wood-carved iconostasis of unique beauty dating back to the 17th century.
Enjoy a walk in Hora of Skopelos, a “living architectural monument”, with more than one hundred churches scattered throughout its narrow streets.
