A Beacon of Education
One of Greece’s most iconic educational institutions, founded in 1928, the Anargyrios and Korgialenios School of Spetses (A.K.S.S.) is a place where education meets history and culture. Inspired by the vision of national benefactors Sotirios Anargyros and Marinos Korgialenios, the institution has long strengthened the connection between education for the people of Spetses and the Greek diaspora with the arts and cultural life.
The school complex is located on the outskirts of Spetses, overlooking Ligoneri Beach, and has been designated a preserved site. It operated as a model boarding school from 1928 until 1983. Among its distinguished alumni are prominent figures in Greece’s political, cultural, and business spheres, including former Prime Minister Georgios Rallis and the renowned composer Iannis Xenakis, along with numerous diplomats, entrepreneurs, and writers.
Today, the school’s facilities host international conferences and major events. Since 2021, they have also been home to the A.K.S.S. Music Academy, as well as a library of approximately 5,000 Greek and international titles, making it an ideal setting for study and research.
You can combine your visit with a coffee or a light meal at the The Magus Art Café, located within the school grounds, before continuing your walk toward Dapia. There, you will encounter the iconic Poseidonion Grand Hotel—another vision brought to life by Sotirios Anargyros. A landmark of Spetses hospitality since 1914, it is the island’s most recognisable icon. Its elegant architecture evokes the grand hotels of the French Riviera, lending the island an air of European seaside glamour.
